Paruppu Usili Curry

Paruppu Usili Curry

This curry is made in just 1 tbsp of oil! There are a couple of processes involved in making this curry. This can be eaten along with sambhar or rasam rice. It is a combination of green vegetables and lentils making it rich in protein and carbs. This is also a popular dish from South India. It is also served in weddings due to its popularity. It is a very simple dish but very tasty.
I made this curry today along with Paruppu Rasam. It is a good combination. Try it and let me know.

Ingredients
1/2 cup tur dal
1/2 cup chana dal
4-5 dried red chillies
Half inch ginger
5-6 curry leaves (optional)
2 cups string beans, finely chopped
3/4 cup green peas
1/2 cup cilantro
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
Pinch of hing
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp mustard seeds
2 tsp urad dal
1 tbsp oil
Salt as required

Method
Soak the chana dal and tur dal for 40 minutes. Strain the water and coarsely grind it along with red chillies, salt, ginger and curry leaves.

Now you need to steam this paste. You need to use Idli cooker. I have this one -
Butterfly Idli Cooker with 6 Plates. I love this cooker as it comes with 1 Mini idli mould as a bonus.
Grease the moulds with some oil. Make small balls of the ground paste and place them on the moulds.

Steam this for 10-12 minutes. Let it cool down. Remove the steamed dals and break them into pieces. Keep this aside.

Wash and boil the beans and peas together along with some salt and turmeric powder.

Strain the water and keep this aside.

In a pan, heat the oil. Temper the cumin seeds, mustard seeds and urad dal.

Add hing and the steamed dal pieces. Mix well. Cook for 5-6 minutes.

Now add the green beans and peas. Mix lightly and take the pan off the flame.

Now add the cilantro and mix well. Serve it hot with sambhar/rasam rice.
